The venue: Peter Lougheed Provincial Park

The trails: Elk Pass (portion), Moraine

The conditions: Winter wonderland!

Simona and I were a little concerned to start with nothing track set, but the skier set tracks were just as enjoyable. It felt like a true natural Nordic adventure!

The WHL playoffs kicked off on Thursday with the loan game being a 6-2 victory for the Brandon Wheat Kings overs the Calgary Hitmen. I was watching from above in the press box and took in the Game 2 as well - a 4-nil shutout victory for the hometown Hitmen.

Scouted players from Brandon:

Calgary Hitmen Media Pass 2011-12

Calgary Hitmen

After obtaining press credentials for the World Junior Hockey Championships 2012 in Calgary, AB, I also have a media pass for all Calgary Hitmen games (WHL - Western Hockey League - part of the CHL - Canadian Hockey League).

I am now looking forward to the Hitmen playoff run. They had an amazing turn around season after a slow start and the playoffs were looking a long ways away. They have a deep team, well coached and are poised to be a rough competitor in the WHL playoffs.

Calgary International Auto & Truck show 2012:

"What makes the perfect driver’s car? It’s a question McLaren’s engineers asked themselves constantly when defining the 12C. As passionate driving enthusiasts themselves, they imagined the car they would want to own. A car with class-beating performance, of course. But one that feels comfortable and inspires confidence from the moment you sit in it. A car that is easy to drive in town, but rewards skill on the road or track. One that delivers exhilarating performance in the real world, not just in the hands of a professional driver on a circuit. One that offers a true, linear connection between every driver action and vehicle reaction. And add to that list the latest in-car entertainment, communication and navigation technology, presented in a way that is intuitive to use."

I went to the Calgary Auto Show Friday night, March 16th, 2012 with a colleague from work, Simon "Sang Woo" Lee. Two hours of auto perusing was tiring, but a neat experience.

I went with the purpose of comparing small to midsize SUV/CUVs. The Infiniti EX35 impressed me, but would have to test drive before making any decisions.

There is also the issue of buying new versus 1 or 2 years old. The EX35 was last updated in 2011.

There were some fantastic fantasy cars present - Ferrari, Ashton Martin and the like, but a model I never heard of before was quite spectacular - TTH.

I definitely would go again, but 2 hours is about enough. I'd like to see an auto show in the US or Europe to compare.

March 17th: Our 5th Anniversary & St. Patrick's Day

Where does the time go? Five years ago yesterday we exchanged vows under the majestic mountain backdrop in Banff in a civil ceremony performed by the mayor of Banff.

An amazing five years so far, with many more brilliant ones to come.

I doesn't hurt a guy to remember the date as well - St. Patrick's Day!

We celebrated today with our favourite winter activity - cross-country skiing! This was our first venture this year to Lake Louise and we completed Fairview Loop and a portion of Moraine Lake road. The Tramline trail on the way back was pretty flat and basic. Next time, I think we'll just go back on Fairview in the opposite direction - it's a fantastic trail.

The mountains were not very visible, but the scenery was amazing and breathtaking nonetheless. The temperatures were extremely conducive to Nordic skiing with about -4 and varying levels of beautiful snow flurries

Our anniversary meal: Simona discovered a little gem of a French restaurant in Canmore - La Belle Patate. It's focus - everything poutine! Simona had the chicken and pea variety (Vauvod or Gauvald?) and I had the Mexican edition (ground beef, tomatoes, hot peppers and sauce).  Delicious and filling, but very comforting after a few hours of skiing. Our beverage of choice: black cherry cola from the Grizzly Paw - local pub, microbrewery and soda pop bottling factory.
