Livestrong - Biking Season Officially Started

It's been a long but enjoyable winter in Calgary, AB. While I dove head first into nordic skiing this past winter, it's great to finally get back on the saddle, so to speak - the biking saddle that is.

After 10 days back on the Rock with all the hearty eating (with drinks as well!), I can sure use the endurance exercise.

Here's my ride (not exactly as pictured), purchased last year at BowCycle, Calgary:
Here's my new inspirational helmet in an attempt to find my inner "Livestrong" attitude:
1st day biking to & fro work in 2011 = May 5 - Cinco de Maya.

Initial weight (PM of May 5/11) = 177 lbs

Happy trails!

About this talk

Tapping into the findings of his latest book, NYTimes columnist David Brooks unpacks new insights into human nature from the cognitive sciences -- insights with massive implications for economics and politics as well as our own self-knowledge. In a talk full of humor, he shows how you can't hope to understand humans as separate individuals making choices based on their conscious awareness.

Kananaskis Village Nordic Skiing March 3, 2011

My favourite cross-country venue so far. Plenty of climbing and downhill all surrounded by spectacular scenery.

Here's a link to the photo album (do not have to be on Facebook to view)

Here's some pics as I infiltrated (The Hockey Spy always on assignment) Pond Hockey on Sunday at the Lake Louise Classic - Feb 27/11
- Pictures don't do justice to this amazing and beautiful setting.

Not sure if any of you might be able to use in an article, but thought I'd share. Let me know if you want a higher resolution of any of the photos.

CASCO Nordic Spirit Vautron - Nordic Ski Eyewear

This post is simply a reminder to self - this eyewear is an apparent breakthrough in technology and potential godsend for Nordic skiers. In my short venture into this outstanding sport I have found there is no simple solution for sunglasses that fog up during this activity. As noted below, it's made of the same material used in Apache helicopter windshields! Overkill? Maybe. But...if they do what they say, I'd say worth it.

Combining CASCO’s patent pending technology and the original “best of test” CASCO NORDIC, the refined, new CASCO NORDIC SPIRIT is attractive and fashionable. The SKIsport Magazine in Norway rated: “Not only Biathletes love this specialty eyewear. Different from other Sunglasses, this eyewear doesn’t fog up. The lenses protect from heavy snowfall, cold and sun, where usual sunglasses give up at these 32 conditions. You’ll feel the difference!”

From Ezine Articles:
The nordic world has solved the problem of foggy goggles during inclement weather. Casco, a German eyewear manufacturer, has come out with fog-proof cross country ski goggles. The Casco Nordic Spirit are ski goggles designed for cross country skiers. The lenses protect from heavy snowfall, cold and sun, where usual sunglasses give up at these conditions. Different from other sunglasses, this eyewear doesn't fog up. The biathlon cross country ski community is going wild over these goggles since they can hinge up for accurate shooting as well. The Casco Nordic Spirit goggles come in two colors for the head bank - black and white, and are found in two sizes - s/m and m/l. The xc ski goggles come with two lenses - one for sunny days, and one for those cloudy/snowy days.

The Casco Nordic Spirit lenses use Vautron, a unique optical polymer unlike any other. Originally developed for military purpose used in AH-64 Apache helicopter windshield panels this nordic goggle combines benefits in a single lens. Benefits include: High performance photochromi lenses that have automatic adjustment to varying light conditions. Vautron photochromic lenses get dark up to 75-80% of their initial transmission. The combine an anti-reflection mirror with the photochromic lense not typically available.

Nordic Ski Tips: Keith Nicol (From The Rock)

I've recently gotten hooked on cross-country (Nordic) skiing. Here's a link that provides plenty of tips and links to his videos:

I bought my skis at Norseman in Calgary, AB - a place I highly recommend as the skis are tailored to your need & size (height & weight).
